New sub-atomic particle discovered

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on the Franco-Swiss border has made its first clear observation of a new particle since opening in 2009.

Known as Chi-b (3P), it is a boson – the label given to particles that can carry the forces of nature.

The as-yet unpublished discovery is
reported on the Arxiv pre-print server.

The LHC is exploring some of the fundamental questions in “big physics” by colliding proton particles together in a huge underground facility.

Detail in the sub-atomic wreckage from these impacts is expected to yield new information about the way matter is constructed.

The Chi-b (3P) is a more excited state of Chi particles already seen in previous collision experiments, explained Prof Roger Jones, who works on the Atlas detector at the LHC.
“The new particle is made up of a ‘beauty quark’ and a ‘beauty anti-quark’, which are then bound together,” he told BBC News.

“People have thought this more excited state should exist for years but nobody has managed to see it until now.

“It’s also interesting for what it tells us about the forces that hold the quark and the anti-quark together – the strong nuclear force. And that’s the same force that holds, for instance, the atomic nucleus together with its protons and the neutrons.”

The LHC is designed to fill in gaps in the Standard Model – the current framework devised to explain the interactions of sub-atomic particles – and also to look for any new physics beyond it.
In particular, it is using the collisions to try to pin down the famous Higgs particle – another boson that physicists hypothesize can explain why matter has mass.

Discoveries such as Chi-b (3P) are an important part of this quest because they add to the wider background knowledge, says Prof Jones.

“The better we understand the strong force, the more we understand a large part of the data that we see, which is quite often the background to the more exciting things we are looking for, like the Higgs.“So, it’s helping put together that basic understanding that we have and need to do the new physics.”

Mysterious space debris in Namibia

A large metal ball that fell from space into the Namibian grasslands last month is not alien, officials say, but that's about all they know for certain about the object.

According to a report on
The Namibian website, the 13-pound metal sphere with two bumps on its poles was found by a farmer near Onamatunga in the Omunsati region between November 15 and November 20.

Explosions were heard in the area before the discovery, but no evidence of an explosion was seen around the area where the object was found.

Paul Ludik, director of the country's National Forensic Science Institute, told The Namibian the sphere, with a circumference of 3.6 feet, is made of a "sophisticated" metal alloy that is known to man, but he said it has no markings that would identify it. No international space agency has claimed ownership, he said.

“A number of tests have been performed on the object, and it appears to be hollow. We are still busy with a detailed examination of the object,” The Namibian quotes him as saying.

Ludik told The Namibian that the object poses no cause for alarm, and that such reports of metallic spheres falling from space are common in the Southern Hemisphere.

So should we expect a run on helmets at sporting goods stores south of the equator?

At the end of the year

Another year comes to an end. The time that separates us from the Arnold incident has become bigger and bigger and so far, we have our hands empty of just one case that could be a paradigm of the whole UAP problem.

For scientists, we have not been able so far, to produce what can be considered evidence with absolutely any doubt about it.

It makes sense, therefore, to change the kind of work we have been doing so far, to face the UAP directly and personally in hot spots where they happen, to register and track it with a bunch of instruments, and to submit all the data gathered in that way to a sober and accurate scientific evaluation.

Our UAPSG is an international Group, and we have considered that there is a need for more communication among our members.

Last but not least, we approach once again the traditional Holydays of the end of the year and the beginning of a new one.

We wish you all to have peaceful and safe celebrations, and the best for 2012!

UAPSG Coordinators

UAPSG-Uruguay reports: Case solved

Opportunely (October 23, 2011), we gave details of a couple of pictures taken by an Agronomer in the Department of Cerro Largo, Uruguay.

The Uruguayan branch of the UAPSG took responsibility to study and analyze the case. Germán Vázquez was very active getting in contact with the photographer, obtaining the pictures, and discussing the circumstances in which the photographs were taken.

After consulting the photography expert Leopoldo Zambrano Enriquez, UAPSG member in Monterrey, Mexico, and the digital analysis processed in Virginia, U.S.A. by Milton W. Hourcade, the Uruguayan branch, meeting on Saturday, December 10, concluded that what is shown in the referred pictures are birds.

The possibility of being birds is deducted although not totally sustained for two images of things which are at great distance, due to the practical impossibility to identify them because of pixielation.

But an object nearer to the camera, seen in the second photography taken, was definitely identified as a bird flying from left to right of the photographer. Moreover, what at first sight could be taken as the cupola of a strange aerial artifact is an effect created by the movement of the wings.

These conclusions were properly communicated by Vázquez to the photographer who accepted them and commended the work done by the Group.

GEFAI-Uruguay informa: Caso resuelto

TRUE 3D LASER PLASMA DISPLAY

Engineers from Burton Inc. in Japan have rolled out a "True 3D" display, which evolved from work begun five years previously by teams at Keio University and Japan's national institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). While most 3D displays available today involve a form of optical illusion that depends on the parallax or disparity inherent in human binocular vision, this new system, which can function in air or under water, needs no screen of any sort, and the effect is quite impressive.(Source: DigInfo)

FASTER THAN LIGHT NEUTRINO DISPUTED

Subatomic particles called neutrinos cannot move faster than the speed of light, according to a new report. The findings challenge a result reported in September that, if true, would undermine a century of physics.

The team at the INFN-Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy said they had measured faster-than-light speeds in neutrinos sent from Cern, 730km away. Now a different team at the same lab reports findings that, they say, cast doubt on that surprising result.

The Icarus team at the Icarus experiment says that because the neutrinos sent from Cern do not appear to lose energy on their journey, they must not have exceeded the speed of light along the way.

The idea that nothing can move faster than the speed of light is a central tenet in modern physics, forming among many other things a critical part of Albert Einstein's theory of special relativity.(Source: BBC)

WITH “CURIOSITY” NASA WILL SEARCH FOR MICROBIAL LIFE ON MARS

NASA began a historic voyage to Mars with the Nov. 26 launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which carries a car-sized rover named Curiosity. Liftoff from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station aboard an Atlas V rocket occurred at 10:02 a.m. EST (7:02 a.m. PST).

"We are very excited about sending the world's most advanced scientific laboratory to Mars," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "MSL will tell us critical things we need to know about Mars, and while it advances science, we'll be working on the capabilities for a human mission to the Red Planet and to other destinations where we've never been."

The spacecraft, which will arrive at Mars in August 2012, is equipped with the most advanced rover ever to land on another planet. Named Curiosity, the rover will investigate whether the landing region has had environmental conditions favorable for supporting microbial life, and favorable for preserving clues about whether life existed.(Source: NASA)

(Fuente: BBC).
